Funding opportunities
The John Rylands Research Institute and Library has a range of funding opportunities available to researchers at every stage of their career.
Our grants provide exceptional scholars, from The University of Manchester and beyond, with the support required to undertake original and significant research using our world-class collections. We also support applications to a number of external postdoctoral schemes, such as the British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust.
Grant holders have access to the John Rylands Research Institute and Library’s extensive and diverse collections, as well as to a strong community of outstanding researchers, curators and imaging specialists. We also offer tailored grant writing support for those wishing to apply for larger external grant schemes.

This fellowship has been created to support an outstanding doctoral student from The University of Manchester to undertake archival research at the Library of Congress, Washington DC. The successful candidate will spend up to three months as a full-time residential fellow at the John W. Kluge Center, Library of Congress, and will receive a bursary of £2,200 per month plus a return flight to Washington DC.
The purpose of this award is to support a University of Manchester researcher wishing to carry out archival research at The Library of Congress. The Library of Congress contains an outstanding collection of rare books, manuscripts, and special collections, which present significant possibilities for doctoral research.

The JRRI is keen to promote collaborative working with other world-leading special collections in the United States though the promotion of research, networking and other collaborative activities with scholars in the US by University of Manchester researchers.
US Special Collections fellowships are available to researchers at the University of Manchester (including PhD students) who wish to spend up to one month during the 2025-26 academic year in the Huntington Library in California.
